Geology Department Faculty Meeting

Minutes

December 4, 2007

Present: Gosnold, Korom, Gerla, Zheng, Perkins (recording), Hartman, Matheney, Forsman, LeFever

Announcements

■Our departmental Christmas party is Thursday at the Royal Dork

■We have some extra tuition waver money and need to encourage students to use it to fund tuition for courses in their POS.

■Petroleum Engineering building: An alum has committed to paying for the building.  We are not sure where it is going to be built yet.  There is potential for other funds to cover other costs besides the building.  Hope to find out soon.  Meanwhile, we have been requested to put together a curriculum that includes some “business” aspects.

Assessment

■Faculty are reminded that our policy is to assess teaching for one course each year.  UND requires that three different metrics be used.

■We discussed a draft of an assessment reporting form created by Dexter.  This is a way to keep track of the course(s) that we assess.  Faculty should turn in these forms to the office shortly after the end of the semester when assessment occurs, along with supporting info (USAT summaries, Knowledge Survey Results, letter confirming an SGID occurred, self reflections, or other).  Dexter will slightly revise the form in response to faculty comments and circulate it, again.

Faculty Searches

GE search has 9 applicants so far.  Letters of recommendation have been solicited.

Geol search has 4 applicants so far.  We will request letters soon.

Next Faculty meeting is Jan 8.

■The departmental Tenure and Promotion policy is on the agenda.  Dexter will circulate the latest version.
